Sponsor a Back-To-School-Supplies Drive to Support LGBTQ Youth in Pgh
We realize it is almost heresy to have this conversation in early July, but it is a conversation worth having.
About 50 of the LGBTQIA youth who participate or are connected with the Gay & Lesbian Community Center of Pittsburgh will need help with back to school needs, both middle/high school and college or vo-tech students. Some are not supported by their parents so they can’t be sure someone will help them pick up these items. Others live with families who simply cannot afford the various items required out-of-pocket.
You can help!
First, you can pick up a few extra items (perhaps a BOGO?) when you do your own back-to-school shopping and drop your donation at the GLCC.
Second, you can “adopt a youth” by donating a sturdy (gently used is fine) backpack or messenger bag with supplies.
Third, you can organize a drive. Ask folks coming to your next event or potluck to each bring one item. Or send the shopping list to your personal network and ask folks to purchase a few items. Large group? Adopt 5 youth, bags and all. Ask your company to donate branded bags and ask your colleagues to donate items to fill.
Finally, donate a gift card so students can shop themselves – this is particularly useful for students in need of very specific items for advanced classes. Staples, Office Depot/Max, even Target are great cards to consider.
We try hard to provide new supplies to youth for school, but we are happy to incorporate your gently used items for our in-Center youth activities. With regard to backpacks and messenger bags, gently used is fine.

Donations can be brought to the GLCC – 210 Grant Street in Downtown Pgh. We are a 501c3 so donations are tax-deductible as permitted by the IRS. You can also make a donation by credit card via our donation page.
UPDATE – We want to thank the folks who have stepped forward to organize drives at their August meetings/events. It is really NEVER too late. We can arrange for a volunteer to coordinate logistics at your event and/or provide information for you to distribute.
BACKPACK Question – Most of our youth are over age 13 so any sort of generic or logo backpack that an adult would use is fine – please be sure there are no holes, stains or tears in the straps & that zippers work. Messenger bags, laptop cases and other types of bags are useful. We can use a limited amount of elementary school backpacks. Any bags that are not usable will be sent to our partner, Goodwill Industries for recycling with other textiles.
OTHER REUSE ITEMS – dvd’s, video games, CD’s, board games and more
